What is a Bereavement Flight?

Our hearts go out to you. Let us help you be with your loved ones with a fare that's kind.

Bereavement flights, or compassion fares, are discounted airfares for individuals traveling due to a close family member's death or severe illness. These fares offer financial relief for last-minute bookings and typically provide lower prices and flexible options compared to standard fares. While many airlines have discontinued bereavement fares in recent years, some still offer these discounts with flexible booking options and varying policies.

How Does Bereavement Flight Works?

Bereavement flights offer discounted rates for immediate family members who need to travel urgently due to a death or serious illness. Unlike regular flights, you can't book these fares online. Instead, you must contact our customer support team at +1 (323) 800 6001 and provide proof of the bereavement situation. Once we verify the details, we will apply the discount on your ticket.

Not all airlines provide bereavement fares, and those who offer them all have different policies. Some may offer a percentage off the standard ticket price, while others provide flexible booking options. It's important to check with our team to understand the specific terms and conditions of the airline you choose.

Who Qualifies for a Bereavement Flight?

To qualify for bereavement flights, the passenger must be an immediate relative of the person who has passed away or is critically ill. This typically includes spouses, children, parents, siblings, and sometimes extended family members.

The exact definition of "immediate family" can vary by airline, so it's important to check with them to understand their specific requirements and ensure eligibility.

What Documents Required to Book a Bereavement Flight?

To book a bereavement flight, airlines typically require documentation to verify the immediate family member's death or critical illness. This may include:

  • A death certificate.
  • A letter from the hospital or an obituary.
  • Proof of relation like a birth certificate or marriage license, especially if the family connection isn't immediately clear by the last name.

Providing these documents promptly is crucial, as our cheapest bereavement fares are often time sensitive. Additionally, airlines may request the name and contact details of the funeral home, hospital, or hospice for further verification.

American Airlines Bereavement Fares: American Airlines does not offer specific bereavement fares but may consider ticket refunds in case of a death, with required proof of relationship.

United Bereavement Fares: United Airlines discontinued its bereavement fare program in 2014 and no longer provides this benefit.

Are Bereavement Flights Worth It?

Whether bereavement flights are worth it depends on your needs and airline policies. While these fares offer much-needed relief during a tough time, their availability and benefits vary.
