Spirit Airlines Announces New Budget-Friendly Route from Birmingham to EWR
Spirit Airlines is expanding its service at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) with a new nonstop route. Starting June 4, the airline will operate seasonal flights between Birmingham (BHM) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This route will provide a budget-friendly travel option to the New York City area.
The airline first launched flights in Alabama last October, with service from Birmingham to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The expansion reflects Spirit’s growing presence in the region.
John Kirby, Spirit Airlines' Vice President of Network Planning, shared his excitement about the new route. "It’s great to be adding the only nonstop route to Newark (EWR) from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) soon after we first launched our BHM service," he said. He added that this service provides a "high-value and convenient way to visit the New York area this summer."
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is just 15 miles from Manhattan, making it a strategic entry point for travelers heading to New York City. The flights will give passengers a direct and affordable connection to the region.
Ashby Pate, Board Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority, welcomed the expansion. "We are thrilled to see Spirit Airlines continuing to invest in this community," he said. He noted that adding another nonstop destination highlights Spirit's confidence in the Birmingham market.
The new route comes after a strong year for Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. The airport served 3.2 million travelers in 2024, marking a 6% increase over the previous year.
This expansion strengthens the airline’s commitment to offering low-fare options and improving connectivity for Birmingham travelers.
