Exciting Developments in the Airline Industry: New Routes and Services

The airline industry is constantly changing, and many airlines are adding new routes and expanding their services right now.

On September 27, Breeze Airways welcomed two new airports to its growing network: Washington Dulles and Ogdensburg, located near the Canadian border. The initial route connects Dulles to Ogdensburg, making it the only service from this New York State airport.

The Essential Air Service (EAS) program is funding this route. The service was announced just two weeks before the first flight took off. Breeze positioned the aircraft empty from Charleston to Dulles before commencing operations to Ogdensburg.

From 2019 to 2022, United Express operated between these two airports. Notably, Ogdensburg has never had direct flights to Reagan National or Baltimore.

In addition, on October 1, Breeze initiated flights from Provo, Utah, to Dulles. This marks the first non-stop service between these two locations, with Breeze offering three flights weekly.

Breeze has more routes planned from Dulles. Starting November 8, it will offer twice-weekly flights to South Bend, Indiana, another new airport for Breeze. Then, on November 21, Vero Beach, Florida, will also see twice-weekly flights, both new services. The aircraft will operate a combined route between Vero Beach, Dulles, and South Bend.

Uganda Airlines recently introduced a triangular route between Entebbe, Lusaka, and Harare served four times weekly on the CRJ900. The schedule features two routes: Entebbe-Lusaka-Harare-Entebbe on Mondays and Thursdays and Entebbe-Harare-Lusaka-Entebbe on Thursdays and Saturdays.

This new service is significant as it has the fifth freedom of traffic rights between Lusaka and Harare. The market has an estimated 25,000 roundtrip passengers, previously served by various airlines, including Air Botswana and Kenya Airways. Interestingly, Entebbe traffic to these two capitals was about 10,500 passengers. Uganda Airlines aims to attract passengers from other cities connecting through its Entebbe hub, focusing on popular routes to Dubai, Mumbai, and Nairobi.

On September 26, Venice celebrated its first scheduled flights from Shanghai, marking a significant milestone for the city. Operated by China Eastern Airlines, this service connects Venice with Shanghai and highlights the city's position as a major tourist destination. Venice now enjoys direct access to 13 European airports through this airline.

The Shanghai-Venice route, which spans 4,829 nautical miles (8,944 kilometers), runs three times a week year-round. This service mainly utilizes the 232-seat A330-200 aircraft. Although there are only about 23,000 roundtrip passengers annually on this route, it remains Venice's largest market from China.

Malaysia Airlines has launched flights from Kuala Lumpur to Da Nang, making it its third destination in Vietnam. The 882 nautical miles (1,634 km) route is served daily using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

To facilitate connecting traffic, Malaysia Airlines has implemented a split schedule. Flights depart Kuala Lumpur at various times, ensuring flexibility for passengers. The route is not exclusive to Malaysia Airlines; it competes with AirAsia and Batik Air Malaysia.

United Airlines, in partnership with United Express, has resumed flights from Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Washington Dulles. The service, relaunched on September 26, is part of United's strategy to enhance regional connectivity.

Currently, United operates three flights daily on the 334 nautical mile (619 km) route. Most flights utilize CommutAir's 50-seat ERJ145 aircraft, while GoJet's 50-seat three-class CRJ550s will operate once daily between October 27 and December 2.

In 2019, this route carried about 98,000 roundtrip passengers, over 60% of whom transferred to other flights. The most popular connecting destination was Hartford, Connecticut.

Several additional route launches have occurred recently. LOT Polish Airlines reintroduced flights from Warsaw to Lyon, which had previously served until 2008. China Eastern also initiated flights from Shanghai Pudong to Kazan and Xian to Milan Malpensa.

Moreover, Utah's St. George has reestablished flights to Los Angeles through United Express, marking the first service since 2020. Qantas has begun operating its A380 on the Sydney to Johannesburg route. Meanwhile, Wizz Air has started its inaugural flights from Tirana to Leipzig.

Singapore Airlines has celebrated 100 days since resuming its London Gatwick route. Norse Atlantic reported that it has successfully carried two million passengers. Furthermore, Jet2 is celebrating 20 years of service at Belfast International, Eurowings has reached a decade in Newcastle, and Corendon is marking five years at its Nuremberg base.

As things return to normal, travelers can look forward to more destinations and flight options. With all these new developments, air travel enthusiasts have plenty of exciting opportunities.
