DOT Investigates Delta's IT Outage Chaos

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has investigated Delta Air Lines following a significant IT outage that led to thousands of flight cancellations. This investigation stemmed from widespread disruptions and reported failures in customer service, where Delta allegedly did not meet its commitments to passengers. DOT Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the thoroughness of the investigation, reporting the high volume of complaints received from all the affected travelers.

Secretary Pete Buttigieg assured that the DOT will utilize its full investigative and enforcement authority to safeguard the rights of Delta's passengers. Delta Air Lines acknowledged the investigation and stated it is fully cooperating. It also highlighted ongoing efforts to assist affected customers and restore normal operations promptly.

The IT outage, caused by a software update issue from CrowdStrike, severely impacted Delta's systems, resulting in the cancellation of more than 4,000 flights since Friday. CEO Ed Bastian described the situation as challenging, acknowledging the frustrations experienced by passengers and crew members alike. Despite significant progress in restoring systems, critical functions such as the crew tracker remained offline, contributing to ongoing operational disruptions.

Delta executives have cautioned that challenges may persist during the busy summer travel season. As of midmorning Tuesday, FlightAware reported that 12% of Delta flights were canceled and 13% were delayed. Passengers stranded at airports, including those in Atlanta and Minneapolis, shared stories of multi-day delays and difficulties securing rental cars and hotels.

This incident parallels past airline crises, such as Southwest Airlines' issues in 2022, which resulted in a substantial penalty from the DOT. Delta reiterated its commitment to customer care amid adversity, pledging continued efforts to minimize disruptions and support affected travelers.
