American Airlines Makes History with 16-Hour Flight from Dallas to Brisbane
The longest direct flight in American Airlines' history has successfully landed, marking a significant milestone for the airline and the aviation industry. Flight AAL7 took off from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Saturday night and made its way to Brisbane Airport in Australia. The journey covered nearly 8,300 miles and lasted almost 16 hours, making it a remarkable feat for air travel.
Departing at 9:57 p.m. CDT on October 26, the Boeing 787-9 arrived in Brisbane approximately 33 minutes early, landing at 4:57 a.m. AEST on October 28. This inaugural nonstop connection has sparked considerable excitement in the United States and Australia. The flight was staffed by a capable crew of three pilots, a relief captain, and 11 flight attendants, ensuring a smooth journey for passengers.
Brisbane Airport celebrated the momentous arrival by livestreaming the landing on its YouTube channel. More than 12,000 viewers tuned in to enjoy the "front row window seat" provided by a runway camera. While the exact number of passengers on board was not disclosed, the aircraft has a capacity of 285 seats.
American Airlines held a special gate event at DFW Airport to celebrate the flight. Passengers received gift bags containing a koala plushie, a commemorative postcard, and a voucher for a free experience at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane. This added a personal touch to the journey and made the event memorable.
As the plane touched down, crew members placed American and Australian flags outside the cockpit, symbolizing the connection between the two countries. Peter Doherty, a spokesperson for Brisbane Airport, remarked, "This is not just linking two cities; this is linking two countries. Look at that! It's fantastic!" His enthusiasm reflects the pride felt by many on this significant occasion.
Flightradar24 indicated that this inaugural flight would be among the most tracked in the world. It is not only the longest flight for American Airlines but also the longest in Brisbane Airport's network. This new route is expected to enhance connectivity between the United States and Australia, making travel more accessible.
American Airlines will operate five weekly flights on this route, with plans to increase to daily flights from December through the end of March. With one-way fares starting at around $600 for economy seating, travelers can look forward to exploring this new connection.
Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff expressed the importance of this new route, stating, "Today's arrival of American Airlines from Dallas-Fort Worth is a landmark moment for Brisbane and Queensland." He highlighted the shared industries between the two regions, such as agriculture, energy, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
De Graaff further noted, "They say there are few things bigger than Texas. Well, Queensland is three times bigger than Texas." This comment illustrates the scale of the new connection, opening opportunities for tourism and business on both sides of the Pacific. He added that the flight would likely bring "thousands of additional tourists to Queensland, boosting tourism jobs across the state."
This new connection is just the beginning, promising a bright future for travelers eager to explore the wonders of both Australia and the United States.
