American Airlines Boosts LaGuardia Network with Two New Summer 2025 Routes
American Airlines is strengthening its presence in New York by adding two new routes from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in Summer 2025. The airline will introduce seasonal service to Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) and resume flights to Charleston International Airport (CHS), marking a strategic expansion in a competitive market.
The new LaGuardia-to-Myrtle Beach route will operate as a seasonal, Saturday-only service starting June 14, 2025. This marks American’s first return to this route since the 2009 US Airways merger, when US Airways previously operated the service. The airline will enter a market currently dominated by Spirit Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which hold over 95% of the market share.
Passenger demand for this route has grown steadily, with 288 passengers traveling each way daily as of September 2024, up from 269 the previous year. Despite increased competition, average round-trip fares have dropped from $423 to $372, making the route more accessible to travelers. About 70% of bookings originate from New York, while 30% come from Myrtle Beach.
Flight capacity for this route peaks in the summer, increasing from 244 daily seats in February 2025 to 379 in May 2025. American Airlines will operate its first flight on June 14, departing LaGuardia at 9:00 AM and arriving in Myrtle Beach at 11:04 AM, with a flight duration of approximately two hours.
In addition to Myrtle Beach, American Airlines will reinstate its LaGuardia-to-Charleston service in June 2025. This route was previously suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, Delta Air Lines dominates the market with four daily flights, while JetBlue Airways exited after the dissolution of the Northeast Alliance in 2024.
Passenger demand for this route has declined, dropping from 365 daily passengers in September 2023 to 312 in September 2024. However, average round-trip fares have increased from $476 to $552. Bookings are evenly split, with 53% originating from New York and 47% from Charleston.
Flight capacity on this route is set to grow from 279 daily seats in February 2025 to 401 in May 2025. Delta operates its flights with CRJ-900 aircraft, but American Airlines’ return introduces a new competitor, creating a more dynamic market.
With these new routes, American Airlines is positioning itself as a stronger player in the New York market. The airline’s expansion offers passengers more travel options while increasing competition against other major carriers.
