Delta Expands Austin Services with 5 New Routes to Major Cities
Delta Airlines has announced an expansion of its services from Austin, Texas, launching five new nonstop routes beginning in the upcoming year. The first new route will connect Austin to Panama City, Florida, starting on March 9. Subsequently, nonstop flights to Indianapolis and Memphis will commence on May 7, with flights to San Francisco and Tampa launching on June 8. All routes will operate year-round with daily flights.
SkyWest will operate the Panama City, Indianapolis, and Memphis routes as Delta Connection, utilizing Embraer 175 aircraft. In contrast, Delta's Airbus A220-300 will be used on the San Francisco and Tampa routes.
This expansion follows Delta's previous announcement of nonstop service from Austin to New Orleans, set to begin on February 27. Delta has also added four new routes from Austin this year, including Nashville, McAllen, Midland/Odessa, and Harlingen.
With these additions, Delta is set to have the second-largest market share at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), based on the number of daily departing flights. Joe Esposito, senior vice president for network planning, stated, "Delta has made its commitment to Austin known, and these new routes and the 55 peak-day departures planned for Summer 2025 reaffirm that." He added that Delta had already implemented a 20% increase in seat capacity in April, enhancing connections to both Texas and global destinations.
The new routes also reflect a strategic move as Delta takes over services previously offered by American Airlines. American Airlines has reduced its operations by cutting more than 30 routes from AUS in the past year. Notably, Delta will be the only airline offering direct flights to Memphis.
Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines will also serve the Indianapolis route, while American and Southwest provide service to Panama City. Alaska and United Airlines serve San Francisco, and Southwest serves Tampa.
"We're incredibly excited to join Delta in celebrating these new routes," said Ghizlane Badawi, CEO of Austin-Bergstrom. "Delta has been making significant investments to connect Austin and Central Texas with more choices, greater convenience, and enhanced connectivity."
Delta has experienced substantial passenger growth at Austin-Bergstrom, with over 1.8 million passengers flying in and out between January and July this year—a remarkable 23.5% increase compared to last year. In contrast, American Airlines has seen a 16% decline in passenger numbers. Delta currently ranks as the third-largest airline operating at AUS, capturing 14.5% of all passenger traffic between January and July.
