Delta Adds Nigerian Cuisine to In-Flight Menu for Lagos-Atlanta Route

Delta Airlines has announced plans to introduce Nigerian dishes on its in-flight menu for passengers traveling between Lagos and Atlanta. This initiative seeks to enhance the travel experience while celebrating Nigeria's rich culinary heritage. It also aligns with a Nigerian government directive, effective January 2025, requiring foreign airlines to use local caterers for onboard meals.

The directive, issued in October 2024 by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, seeks to encourage foreign airlines to use Nigerian produce and caterers. Delta has embraced this policy and will offer passengers traveling from Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport a mix of traditional Nigerian delicacies and international dishes.

For those flying in Delta One, the airline's premium cabin, the experience will be elevated with a curated menu combining Nigerian flavors with global cuisine. The airline stated that this initiative is designed to cater to all tastes, from hearty local dishes to international favorites.

Among the Nigerian dishes featured are Ewa Agoyin, a bean-based dish, and various flavorful sides. Main course options include roasted cod with basmati rice, again-style beans, and sweet plantains. Another option is grilled chicken thighs with jollof rice and plantains. Vegetarians can opt for bean stew with rice, spinach, tomatoes, and fried onions.

Dessert options blend both Nigerian and international influences. Choices include pineapple upside-down tart with whipped cream, classic ice cream sundaes, or a refined fruit and cheese plate. As the flight nears Atlanta, Delta One passengers will be served a final meal with spicy chicken pie, vegetable salad with lemon dressing, and mini desserts. Vegetarian passengers can choose jollof risotto with roasted vegetables and fresh fruit.

Delta's move caters to Nigerian food lovers and enriches the flight experience with a blend of cultures. This culinary initiative reflects the airline's commitment to offering a variety of high-quality and authentic meals. It will roll out in time for the 2025 summer season, coinciding with the Nigerian government's mandate.

This effort is in line with the growing trend of airlines offering localized, culturally relevant meals to improve passenger satisfaction. The new menu will make flights on the Lagos-Atlanta route more memorable for passengers.

The menu is expected to attract Nigerian travelers, who will now enjoy a taste of home while flying. The initiative also strengthens Delta's ties with Nigeria, one of its key markets in Africa, as the airline continues to grow its global presence.
